Choosing the right bollard system comes down to one key question: how often do vehicles need to access the area?
Bollards are used to manage vehicle movement, protect pedestrians and support perimeter security across public spaces, commercial sites, government facilities, events and high-security environments. However, not every site needs the same type of bollard. Some areas need regular vehicle access, some only need occasional entry, and others need vehicles kept out permanently.
A simple way to choose is to look at how often vehicles need access. Most sites will fall into one of four categories.
| Bollard Type | Best For | Access Level |
| Fully Automatic Bollards | Trafficable areas with regular vehicle movement | Frequent access |
| Semi-Automatic Bollards | Areas needing occasional vehicle access | A couple of times per week |
| Removable Bollards | Sites with minimal access requirements | Rare access |
| Fixed Bollards | Areas where vehicles should not enter | No access |

Fully Automatic Bollards
Fully automatic bollards are best suited to trafficable areas where vehicles need regular access. They can be raised or lowered through a control system. This makes them useful for managed entrances, secure facilities, commercial buildings, service areas and high-use access points where authorised vehicles need regular entry.
They are often used where access needs to stay controlled throughout the day without leaving the entrance open to unauthorised vehicles. This may include service entrances, government sites, transport areas and other areas where vehicle access needs to stay controlled throughout the day. Depending on the site, bollards may also work alongside vehicle gates, access control systems or other perimeter security measures.
Semi-Automatic Bollards
Semi-automatic bollards are a practical option when vehicle access is needed occasionally, but not constantly. This may include access for deliveries, maintenance, waste collection or service vehicles a couple of times a week.
They offer more flexibility than fixed bollards without requiring the same level of automation as a fully automatic system. For sites that need ad hoc vehicle access, semi-automatic bollards can provide flexibility without the cost or complexity of a fully automatic system.
Removable Bollards
Removable bollards are suited to areas with minimal access requirements. They provide a physical barrier most of the time but can be removed when vehicle access is genuinely needed.
This makes them useful for pedestrian areas, event spaces, restricted zones, commercial sites and public areas where vehicle access is rare. They can help keep spaces protected during normal use while allowing planned access for maintenance, emergency vehicles or special site requirements.
Fixed Bollards
Fixed bollards are used where vehicle access is not required. Once installed, they create a permanent barrier to help prevent vehicles from entering protected areas. Because they do not need to be raised, lowered or removed, they are often a straightforward option for areas with no vehicle access requirement.
They are commonly used around pedestrian zones, shopfronts, public spaces, infrastructure, stadiums, government buildings and other sites where vehicles should be kept out entirely.
Which Bollard Type Do You Need?
The right choice depends on how often vehicles need access, who needs to enter the area and whether the bollards need to provide impact-rated protection.
As a simple guide:
- If vehicles need to pass through regularly, fully automatic bollards are usually the most suitable option.
- If access is only needed occasionally, semi-automatic bollards may be more practical.
- If access is rare, removable bollards may be enough.
- If vehicles should not enter at all, fixed bollards are usually the right solution.
Other factors may include:
- Site layout
- Pedestrian movement
- Underground services
- Traffic flow
- Emergency access
- Whether impact-rated or Hostile Vehicle Mitigation protection is required
