The UNAFOR Core™: Where Advanced Security Meets Seamless Urban Design

The UNAFOR Core™

In an increasingly unpredictable world, the paramount importance of security, whether for private premises or public spaces, cannot be overstated. From the escalating threat of vehicle ramming and bombing attacks to persistent unauthorised access attempts, a diverse array of challenges necessitates robust protective measures. In this complex security landscape, the implementation of comprehensive Hostile Vehicle Mitigation (HVM) solutions, such as the innovative UNAFOR Core™ system, has become not just beneficial, but an absolute necessity.

Designed to safeguard people, infrastructure and operations without compromising aesthetics or functionality, UNAFOR Core™ represents a new generation of protection that meets the realities of modern threats while aligning with today’s architectural and operational needs.

What Is UNAFOR Core™?

UNAFOR is a design-led Hostile Vehicle Mitigation (HVM) system engineered to deliver certified protection while integrating discreetly into built environments. At the heart of the system is the UNAFOR Core™. It is a pre‑assembled, galvanised steel foundation certified under IWA 14‑1:2013. It is designed to stop hostile vehicles in their tracks without creating an eyesore or disrupting public flow and access.

This foundation is part of a shallow mount vehicle barrier system that requires minimal excavation and avoids heavy civil works. With flexible above-ground design elements, UNAFOR Core™ allows users to select from bollards, planters, benches or custom shrouds. Doing so delivers both protection and visual harmony.

How UNAFOR Core™ Works?

The strength of UNAFOR lies in its engineering simplicity. Each Core™ unit requires just 200–250 mm of installation depth (inclusive of up to 100mm of paving or surface finishes), classifying it as a shallow mount solution, ideal for both new developments and retrofit scenarios. This minimal foundation depth eliminates the need for extensive excavation or reinforcement, making the system particularly valuable in sites with underground constraints or heritage protections.

Installation begins with the embedded foundation socket. When needed, a security-rated post or bollard is inserted and locked in place using a manual click-lock mechanism. Most installations require no lifting equipment and can be carried out by trained on-site staff, which makes the system fast, cost-effective and easy to manage.

The above-ground components, known as shrouds, are fully customisable. Options range from simple steel bollards to concrete planters, timber benches or branded urban furniture. This conceals the impact-rated core within a visually pleasing element that complements its surroundings.

The Applications Of UNAFOR Core™

UNAFOR Core™ is trusted across a variety of applications where vehicle mitigation is essential but traditional barriers are impractical or visually obtrusive. In stadia and other event venues, such as in the UK’s Edgeley Park and MKM Stadium, the system allows bollards to be deployed on match or event days and removed afterwards. This ensures public safety without affecting normal access when not in use.

In urban centres and public realm projects, including UK’s Bradford City Park, UNAFOR Core™ has been adopted to create secure yet welcoming environments. Static units remain in place to protect pedestrian zones, while removable versions offer quick access for emergency services or deliveries. These projects demonstrate how the system supports flexible traffic management without sacrificing design integrity.

Retail precincts and heritage sites also benefit from UNAFOR’s discreet appearance and ease of installation. Whether shielding storefronts from ram-raid threats or safeguarding historic architecture, the system’s adaptability ensures that safety enhancements do not detract from visual appeal.

Government buildings are another key application area, where discreet and IWA-rated protection is essential for public safety while preserving the formal and civic character of the site. UNAFOR Core™ provides a solution that can integrate with both traditional and modern architectural settings without requiring intrusive, high-maintenance installations.

Outdoor dining areas also benefit greatly from UNAFOR Core™. Councils and business owners can create inviting alfresco environments that encourage foot traffic while maintaining safety from vehicle threats. The system’s shallow-mount design and optional removability offer the flexibility needed for seasonal or evolving urban layouts.

How UNAFOR Core™ Differs And Its Key Benefits

Unlike conventional HVM options such as fixed bollards, large concrete blocks or deep‑mount barriers, UNAFOR Core™ offers a more refined and flexible approach. Its shallow installation depth significantly reduces groundwork disruption, making it feasible to install in sensitive areas or sites with restricted underground access. This contrasts with many traditional barriers that require deep foundations, extensive excavation and costly civil works.

It is equally adaptable in terms of permanence, UNAFOR Core™ can be installed as a fully permanent or semi‑permanent solution, offering reusable and relocatable elements that support changing site needs. This future‑proof flexibility means posts and shrouds can be redeployed or removed as required, with low maintenance, yielding long‑term cost savings.

The system’s removability and modularity grant site managers the ability to adjust security measures in real time, which makes it ideal for events, emergencies or routine access needs. Unlike heavy fixed barriers, UNAFOR Core™ allows for fast reconfiguration without heavy machinery.

Aesthetics are also a distinctive benefit. Rather than imposing bulky, functional barriers, UNAFOR’s shrouds integrate seamlessly into the urban fabric. Whether chosen for seating, planters, bike racks or branding, these elements never compromise the barrier’s certified integrity.

The result is a system that bridges the gap between protection and presentation that does not force urban planners, architects or asset owners to choose between security and aesthetics. Its certified performance, ease of use, architectural adaptability and ability to be permanent, semi‑permanent, reusable and relocatable make it one of the most forward‑thinking vehicle mitigation systems on the market.
